If you plan for a year, plant rice.
If you plan for ten years,
plant trees.
If you plan for a century,
educate your children.
Nepali proverb
It was the meeting of a little girl, Sushi, one evening in February 1992, in a street in Kathmandu,
which inspired
“Nepal, Childhood and Light”.
Nepal, Childhood and Light
Historical
A nice story
“Nepal, Childhood and Light” was born from chance encounters in Kathmandu. Michèle and Pierre-André Heller meet Sushi, a courageous little girl who sold trinkets in the street to help her parents and brothers and sisters.
A special relationship develops over the course of the discovery of Kathmandu and Sushi's dearest wish, to go to school, comes true: Michèle Heller leaves the cost of the little girl's schooling to a friend.
A year passes. Michèle, without news, returns to Nepal. Sushi is not safe at school. His family is in poverty and school is too expensive despite the help provided.
Michèle meets Sushi's parents. Her mother is aware of the opportunity offered to her daughter, she knows that it is through education that she will be able to escape this poverty, a real inevitability in this country frozen by the caste system. Her father, encouraged by theResidents of the neighborhood sharing the same poverty, accept.
Sushi will be educated at a boarding school.
The story could have ended there, but Michèle and Pierre-André are convinced that what was done for one must be done for others. “Népal Enfance et Lumière”, an association according to the 1901 law, was founded in June 1993.
The care of children has changed somewhat over the years: a first home managed by volunteers was replaced by a private Nepalese boarding school then, again, a home was set up after the 2015 earthquake.
It is the first little girl at the origin of the association, Sushi, who currently manages it. A great success for the founders who see their project of helping Nepalese children continued with the help of a Nepalese woman.
Sushi Gujrati Tamang has also created its own school, Amrit-Heller Academy, particularly dedicated to children who cannot pay school fees. Her school bears the names of her father, Amrit, who authorized her to attend school, and of her benefactors, Michèle and Pierre-André Heller.
