If you plan for a year, plant rice.
If you plan for ten years,
plant trees.
If you plan for a century,
educate your children.
Nepali proverb
It was the meeting of a little girl, Sushi, one evening in February 1992, in a street in Kathmandu,
which inspired
“Nepal, Childhood and Light”.
Nepal, Childhood and Light
Welcome
Our aim
Our association aims to completely take care of girls from the most deprived families in order to enable them to get a good education.
Go to school allows them to escape early work that is poorly paid and dangerous for their health and especially early marriage and prostitution.
High school students and university students stay in our home managed by Sushi, a street girl whose meeting led to the creation of NEL by Michèle and Pierre-André Heller.
Thanks to the volunteer work of a few people and the generosity of a few hundred others, NEL has managed, for thirty years, to finance the education of around fifty girls and boys each year.
How is the association run
Népal, Enfance et Lumière (Nepal, Childhood and Light) ?
Membership, donation and sponsorship
NEL, that exists since almost 30 years is a non-profit association, made up uniquely of volunteers. Every year the sums collected go directly to the aid of Nepalese youngsters, without go-betweens, in particular the construction and the up-keep of the new Home constructed after the earthquake of 2015, the complete up-keep for the young girls; health-care, food, lodgings, education, schooling.
The sums collected from sponsorship subscriptions, regular donations or punctual, from subscriptions but also the produce of actions such as the sale of Nepalese craftwork brought back, year after year, in our suitcases, a few concerts or festive evenings etc. fuel the installments made quarterly :
- With Sushi, the manager of the Kathmandu Home, for all that concerns the smooth running of the Home (food, clothing, health-care, up-keep of the building, school transportation, books, etc.).
- With the Ellaine Memorial Academy secondary school
- With the Baljyot association that runs the Amrit-Heller school and is our intermediary; colleges and the expenses relative concerning the students.
- Sushi passes on to us the school performances. We are in permanent relation with her concerning the difficulties encountered by the children and their families. Together, NEL and Sushi try to respond favorably to the problems encountered.
- The godfathers / godmothers correspond with their godchildren through NEL. They are kept informed of the children’s school results, their progression, their difficulties, the options contemplated for higher education. Sometimes also concerning the failures that couldn’t be avoided.
- The young girls sponsored originate from backgrounds particularly disadvantageous (shanty-towns, carpet manufactures, brick-yards, the untouchable cast).
The total up-keep for a child amounts, for NEL, to about 100€ per month
As indicated in the chapiter “joining us” you can become Godparent, co-Godparent,
donor or member, but whether you’re Godparent, co-Godparent, donor or member :
- You will receive 3 or 4 times a year a bulletin from NEL giving you the latest news about the association at Katmandu or in France.
- You will have the right to vote during the General Assembly and,
- as for NEL, recognized as being à “general interest” organization, you can benefit from a tax reduction equal to 66% of the amount of the donation.
The members, the sponsorships and the donations are deductible at 66% from your income tax
NEL is a small size organization
Actually 67 Godparents and co-parents, twenty odd regular donators, around thirty occasional donors and as many members.
Above all, it’s an association that works solely with selfless members which implies a working budget lowered to its strict minimum (essentially secretarial costs).
The funds collected go therefore in their totality to the child through their complete up-keep in the framework of the Home; the remuneration of the staff looking after the child and
the schooling fees paid to the institutions.
